Complicating matters, the property was already undergoing liquidation proceedings. Taking a firm stance, the MCD initiated formal action and issued a strict demand notice against the owning firm to recover the outstanding property tax dues.
Faced with strict municipal action, the taxpayer opted to utilize the corporation's official property tax amnesty scheme to resolve the issue. By leveraging this scheme, the firm successfully cleared the ₹11.69 crore dues on a Friday.
The scheme, officially named the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO), is designed to help property owners clear massive backlogs without crippling penalties. Under the SUNIYO amnesty scheme, taxpayers are eligible for a complete waiver of interest and penalties for the period before the 2020-21 financial year.
To avail of this massive financial benefit, property owners are required to pay only the principal amount of the property tax for the current year, alongside the preceding five financial years (spanning from 2020-21 to 2024-25).
